This semester we are going to explore the topic “parody” by taking two novels as examples: Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and its parodied version, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, written by Seth Grahame-Smith. Parody can be regarded as an attempt to overthrow the seriousness or even superiority of the original work, and this act can be taken as a subversive strategy to de-canonize the established sanctity of “classic” literary works. By reading the “classic” novel against its parodied counterpart, it is the instructor’s contention to encourage students to discuss the potentiality and limitations of parody. |
